Rental Properties and being a tenant

Please see our separate guidelines for finding local accommodation in Selwyn and Christchurch.

A wide range of information on tenancies is available on the Tenancy Services website. This includes the rights and responsibilities of landlords and tenants, how much bond and rent you should pay in advance, market rent information and how to handle disputes. Some of the information is available in a variety of languages. Before signing up for a fixed-term tenancy, make sure you have read and understood a tenant’s responsibility with respect to this type of tenancy.

It is important you read and understand the tenancy agreement with your landlord, as many of these agreements are FIXED TERM which means it can be difficult to get out of the agreement any earlier than the time agreed and signed to.

If you plan to bring family to New Zealand whilst studying at Lincoln University and do not have accommodation prearranged prior to departure, we strongly recommend you come to New Zealand on your own initially. Once here, you can look for and secure suitable family accommodation and then arrange for your family members to join you. Family accommodation is in short supply, so we recommend the above course of action to avoid additional stress to you and your family.
