Research Essay
Course overview
The post-graduate Research Essay course is an elective for the (taught) Masters of Sport and Recreation Management (MSRM), which sits within the Department of Tourism, Sport, and Society. The course revolves around a negotiated and research-oriented project that is framed in discussion with the examiner, and which addresses an issue of importance to stakeholders in the Sport and Recreation sectors.
The research may include:
- Collection and analysis of qualitative or quantitative data (subject to all necessary university ethics approvals)
- evaluation of secondary data sources and existing datasets
- reviews of the academic or policy literature
- development of research tools and protocols.
The nature and scope of the research must be agreed with the examiner to meet the assessment requirements for the course.

After successfully completing this course, you will be able to:
- Investigate a relevant issue using primary and/or secondary research methods.
- Employ relevant methodologies to collect, analyse, and interpret data.
- Synthesize relevant theoretical or applied ideas (concepts) about a particular topic and address them in relation to a specific issue.
- Evaluate the relevant cultural, historical, and/or environmental considerations associated with a particular topic, including bicultural issues applicable to Aotearoa New Zealand.
- Communicate research findings to professional or advisory audiences.
