RECN 699

Research Placement

Course overview

The post-graduate Industry Placement (RECN699) is a final semester capstone course for the (taught) Masters of Sport and Recreation Management (MSRM), which sits within the Department of Tourism, Sport, and Society. The course is focused around a 120-150 hour professional placement within Sport, Recreation and aligned industries.

Drawing on industry network information provided by Lincoln University and/or their own community and organisational connections, students will work with the examiner and a chosen organisation to scope a suitably targeted project or role in which they can bring together their knowledge and skills developed in the first two semesters of the MSRM.

Note that RECN699 should, in most cases, be undertaken during the final semester of the MSRM (deviations from this may be permissible in certain cases and upon agreement with the examiner and/or head of department).

The placement must involve more than an operational experience and should include a combination of some of the following attributes:

  • project management
  • data collection and analysis
  • event planning
  • monitoring and evaluation
  • community engagement
  • leadership and human resource management
  • evidence-based practice
  • policy and strategic planning.

Students are encouraged to begin planning for their placement early by initiating discussions with the examiner, reviewing organisational information within Akoraka/LEARN, and developing their own professional networks within the wider community.
