L3 and 4: All about cows

Discover cow behaviour, herd dynamics and data insights to understand welfare, productivity and farm management.

Cows are social animals, and they function within a herd structure. Modern technologies enable scientists to collect data about cow behaviour which is provided new insights to our bovine companions. Understanding behaviour and how cows spend their day helps farm managers ensure the herd’s welfare and reproductive success.

The lesson plan uses the video Rosie’s World Family Tree Cowcam (5 minutes) to introduce milking breeds in
Aotearoa.

Then work your way through a presentation that goes through how much cows can produce and what some of the collar data can look like.

Then practice note taking and grouping ideas/ finding common themes by watching the video The Private Life of Cows (1hr) that looks more closely at cow behaviour.
