L1.5: Heat transfer

This lesson introduces students to the three methods of heat transfer (conduction, convection, and radiation) through interactive activities, analogies, and experiments.

Starter activity

The telephone game: Students play a whisper game to simulate how heat energy transfers via conduction.

Main activities

  • True-false game: Students physically move to indicate their answers to heat transfer statements. A PowerPoint is provided to guide questions and answers.
  • Radiation experiment: Compare heat absorption between silvered and matte black flasks using a lamp.
  • Playdough particle models: Students model solids, liquids, and gases.
  • Convection demonstration: Mix water and oil to explore density and create hot and cold liquid models to compare density.

Closing activity

Students complete close notes to reinforce learning, this can be done in class or as homework.
